Megan Shepherd’s historical debut, Midnight Beauties, was a fun and exciting read. The premise of witches and magic was surprisingly intriguing. I had low expectations going in but I have to say that I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought. Reading Megan’s writing felt like watching a great show on TV (think: Salem). Because there was always something new happening in each chapter. There were twists at every corner and unexpected revelations; readers are kept in suspense with each character’s actions. And there’s not just one narrator—there are several, including Fia (the lead), Ethan, and Olivia as well as secondary characters Angeline and Adam—this made for an interesting dynamic where you constantly learn new things about what is going on.
