Overview About “Fledgling” by “Octavia E. Butler”

Fledgling is about a girl named Shiori who was genetically altered, her parents were killed and she was kidnapped to be sold as an exotic pet to sick people that wanted to do things to her that she did not like. She only had a year before she turned 18 then if she did not choose to mate with one of her kind or someone else, then she would die in agonizing pain. After they went on with what they called hatchings they put them up for sale and told them that once they chose their mate, then they could go home, but the first thing first is eating…each other! Short was named after Sora which means ‘sky’. A group of runaways helps Shori stay alive and find out what happened to her family. I think it’s great because it has lots of action, romance, mystery, and some drama.

Review About “Fledgling” by “Octavia E. Butler”

The story of Fledgling is set in a world where vampires are a minority who can pass as human (though they do not need to, as they do not age). They have formed their own enclaves and eke out an uneasy peace with humans—some even having successful businesses among them. However, Shori is unusual for her kind because she was born through natural birth, something only possible due to a genetic mutation that gave her immense physical strength but also made her appear deformed (as vampires otherwise appear normal). Short does not care about any of these things, though; all she wants is to find her mother. Unfortunately, when she finally does so it leads to more trouble than either one could ever imagine.

About “Octavia E. Butler” the author of “Fledgling”

American novelist and short-story writer best known for her work in science fiction as well as contemporary, literary fiction. She won multiple Nebula and Hugo awards in her career and also published a popular series of science books for young adults, several short stories and essays (including works on Oprah Winfrey’s book club), and was recognized for her activism in encouraging greater representation of people of color within science fiction writing. Her novels have been described as highly original; it is difficult to find precedents for her work among earlier speculative fiction authors who wrote about matters close to Butler’s heart—philosophical exploration, African-American culture and experiences, perceptions of human nature and possibilities.
