When we met Jim Holden in Leviathan Wakes he was an Earther working for a water hauler on Ceres and thinking about joining up with a Martian private military corporation. We last saw him at the start of Caliban’s War when he led a fleet of Earth ships against his former friends on Mars, who’d just attacked Earth’s colony on Ganymede. Now Holden is back in control of his ship again and itching to get back into action… only things are getting tense between Earth and Mars once more, and someone seems to have it in for Holden personally: there’s a hit out on him that may or may not be connected to his latest case as chief detective aboard his old ice miner, now turned police cruiser, Rocinante.

The five books that make up The Expanse series so far—Leviathan Wakes, Caliban’s War, Abaddon’s Gate, Cibola Burn, and Nemesis Games— are a blast to read. They combine good old-fashioned space opera (rockets, planets, starships, and aliens) with well-written political intrigue as humans and their allies battle for dominance of a region of space called The Expanse. And that’s just what’s going on on Earth; there is an even more dangerous hidden conflict between Mars and Earth brewing in orbit around Jupiter. If you like SciFi you should give these books a try.
