I’ve always been a huge fan of science fiction, and that’s especially true for Star Trek. Which is one of my all-time favorite TV shows (yes, I have watched it and have the DVDs to prove it). When I heard about John Scalzi’s book Redshirts, I knew I had to read it as soon as possible. The premise was so interesting, I just couldn’t resist! And although this book isn’t exactly like the show that inspired it. I still found myself totally hooked from the first chapter until the very end.

A short review of a long book, Redshirts has all of what you want in sci-fi parody: humor, clever plot twists, and a love for the genre that it affectionately makes fun of. The main plot revolves around Ensign Andrew Dahl who is happy to be on board with his starship. Until he realizes that everyone else on board seems to die suspiciously…and not just once or twice either. Before too long it seems clear that there’s a pattern happening and somehow these deaths seem to coincide with every away mission he goes on. As he struggles to unravel these mysteries surrounding him, help arrives from an unexpected source: Lieutenant Kerensky. But is her help really what it seems?

You’ll learn much more about Redshirts than you will from enjoying it. It’s not quite M*A*S*H meets Star Trek, but there are enough resonances to make it a fun read. And as if that weren’t enough, Redshirts is a brilliant parody that eviscerates anything written in recent years with a genre-fiction bent. (Associated Press) There are tons of inside jokes for people who like science fiction TV shows and movies — I didn’t get them all, but I certainly laughed along when everyone else did.

Redshirts is a very witty and fast-paced science fiction novel. It is considered to be humorous but also touching, as it is based on true human emotions. The characters were well written, with genuine emotion and even growth from their experiences in each chapter. While some of them were a bit flat and predictable, each one had its own flavor that made it unique from all of the others. The different relationships between characters were written well and made for an interesting storyline. I appreciated how there was action happening in every single chapter that kept my interest piqued until I reached a point where I couldn’t put it down anymore—I had to finish reading! Overall, Redshirts is an excellent addition to anyone’s library!
