Bloodchild and Other Stories, by Octavia E. Butler, is a collection of stories that explore the roles and treatment of women in science fiction. The stories are told from the perspective of an African-American woman who grew up in the 1950s. She is giving them both historical and feminist undertones that make them worthy of critical analysis and consideration. Especially in today’s social climate where equality for women, people of color, and the LGBTQ community are hot-button issues.

Overview About “Bloodchild and Other Stories” by “Octavia E. Butler”

This new collection features nine of science fiction’s most celebrated writers. Their work has been called everything from transgressive to revolutionary to dangerous. In their stories, you will find questions about technology, class struggle, gender politics, war, power, and survival; about what it means to be human in a time of global crisis. And why anyone would choose to write science fiction at all. These are challenging stories—for their characters as well as for their readers. But they are also full of beauty, humor, and grace. They show us our world anew through impossible futures, alien worlds, and other dimensions that allow us to see ourselves with fresh eyes. The authors included here have inspired generations of fans who have read them voraciously, quoted them endlessly, and paid tribute to them in song.

Review About “Bloodchild and Other Stories” by “Octavia E. Butler”

I thought that these stories were a little odd for sci-fi, but interesting nonetheless. Each one held a moral of some sort but wasn’t too preachy or blunt about it (well for me at least). They were mostly short stories and ended in kind of an unexpected way, which I liked. I think these are worth reading if you’re into fantasy/sci-fi: A review on Bloodchild and Other Stories by Octavia E. Butler: This is a collection of science fiction short stories written by one of my favorite authors. The first story is called The Evening and Morning Star and it’s set on Earth where humans have enslaved aliens who can only be freed when they give birth to human children. In order to get pregnant, they must mate with men who are infertile so as not to produce more alien offspring.

About “Octavia E. Butler” the author of “Bloodchild and Other Stories”

After writing her first novel, she shelved it because it did not meet her idea of what was good enough to be published. The book was resurrected when she began writing again a few years later. But even then, she did not send it out for publication until 1975, when Bloodchild & Other Stories was published in an edition of 500 copies as a mass-market paperback original (cover price $1). One story from that collection, Speech Sounds, became her first published science fiction story after winning third place in Harlan Ellison’s Writers’ Digest contest in 1977; another story from that collection (Childminder) became her first Hugo Award winner after being selected as one of three stories on which Hugo voters could base their nominations for Best Short Story.
