April 28, 1929 – July 30, 2012) was an Irish novelist and short-story writer. She wrote many bestselling novels and several short stories; she also wrote columns for The Irish Times. Binchy is best known for her detailed portrayals of middle-class Irish life, which were lightened with comedy, wit, and compassion. Many of her works were adapted for stage or screen (including the 1998 film Circle of Friends). Her novel Evening Class was listed on The New York Times Notable Books of 1991. Her 2005 novel Big Girl was an international bestseller and one of Publishers Weekly’s Top 10 Books of 2005; it also won a Romantic Novelists’ Association Award in 2006.[2]

In 2009 she was awarded France’s Order of Arts and Letters for her contribution to European culture. Her final book, Minding Frankie, was published posthumously in September 2012. Binchy was born into a Roman Catholic family in Dalkey, County Dublin, Ireland. She attended Holy Child Convent School in Killiney, Dublin. She worked as a teacher before becoming a full-time writer.[3]Binchy married Tony Ryan in 1956 and they had four children: Paul Anthony Ryan (born 1958), Finbar Patrick Ryan (born 1960), Eithne Patricia Ryan (born 1962), and Donal David Ryan (born 1964).[4][5][6][7] They lived together near Dublin until his death from emphysema on 12 January 2002 at age 75.[8][9]In November 2007 Binchy purchased Beach House from Richard Harris who had owned it since 1970.
