Reviews About “They Say / I Say: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing 4th Edition”

This new edition of They Say/I Say is destined to be a classic. In their characteristic way, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein once again guide us through how arguments work—and they use a plethora of examples from academic writing today to do so. Thanks to technology and social media, we have all become writers; many have become writers who argue professionally or semi-professionally. They Say/I Say will prove invaluable as we develop strategies for forming our ideas into arguments that might persuade our readers. Their discussion of moves like evaluation is right on target and very useful as we try to discern why some essays fail and others succeed. What can’t be said? What must be said? To whom should it be said? Why now?
