Following both The Fires of Heaven (1994) and Crown of Swords (1995), it was nominated for both a Locus Award and World Fantasy Award. But lost to Armour (1995) and Fevre Dream (1982), respectively. Prior to its release, reviews were positive with Denton Public Library’s Book Browser noting that Jordan has raised his game noticeably. While Publishers Weekly stated that Jordan’s thoughtful story deserves a wide audience. It debuted at #7 on The New York Times Best Seller list upon its initial publication, rising to number four over subsequent weeks.

Its title was inspired by Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. The British Fantasy Awards nominated it as Best Novel. And BAFTA-award winner Kate Elliott did an uncredited rewrite on the work prior to publication. It takes place approximately one year after The Fires of Heaven. With a population decimated by war and famine, refugees from surrounding nations stream into Andor, further straining its resources.

Robert Jordan was born in 1948 in Charleston, South Carolina. He taught himself to read when he was four with the incidental aid of a twelve-years-older brother and was tackling Mark Twain and Jules Verne by five. Robert is a graduate of The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, with a degree in physics. He served two tours in Vietnam with the U.S. Army; among his decorations are four bronze stars. A history buff, he also wrote dance and theatre criticism.
