There is so much text in applied calculus that it’s hard to absorb it all in one sitting. While you’re reading a section or chapter, stop every few paragraphs. And try to answer an exercise or two based on what you just read. It doesn’t matter if you get them right at first; focus on being able to explain your answers after each problem set. Going back through and correcting any mistakes will help cement concepts into your brain. You can even take notes as you go through problems to make sure you understand why certain steps are taken in a given solution. For example, the sign is correct because we used y = f(x) instead of y = f(−x). If you find yourself confused while trying to solve a problem set. Then there may be something within that concept that needs more attention.

Dr. Tan has a Ph.D. in mathematics from Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah; M Sc degrees in mathematics and management science from BYU; and an undergraduate degree in mathematics with a minor in economics from BYU as well as an MBA from Miami University.
