Overview About “The Book of Life” by “Deborah Harkness”
In her All Souls trilogy, Deborah Harkness introduced a world filled with vampires, witches, daemons, and time travel that kept readers spellbound. Now she invites you back to explore Oxford’s unseen corners and rediscover beloved characters in The Book of Life, a novel of passion and intrigue where science meets magic. Dr. Diana Bishop returns to Oxford after a decade of self-imposed exile. Despite being surrounded by friends and colleagues who know her as an influential geneticist with a promising future at Yale. Diana cannot forget how she came to leave England—or Simon Stanton. Her vampire lover and former teacher have done everything in their power to win her heart…and body. But when he reveals that he is dying, Diana faces an impossible choice: abandon her life for him or find a way to save him.
Diana turns to one of her brightest students for help and uncovers secrets about herself along with information about a project code-named Ashmole 782. This groundbreaking work was carried out by William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe during their secretive sojourns in Elizabethan England, decades before they began writing plays that would change history forever. With some unexpected help from beyond the grave, Diana is finally able to understand Ashmole 782’s true significance—but not before she finds herself entangled in dangerous new alliances and faced with even more difficult choices than before.
Reviews About “The Book of Life” by “Deborah Harkness”
Have you ever been in love? Of course, you have, we all have. But did you know that being in love can be dangerous? It doesn’t seem to matter if it is between a human and vampire, witch and warlock, or even fae, there are always risks involved. The main characters from each story in the All Souls Trilogy find themselves getting drawn into situations that could change their lives forever. This series is about a real family that has been hiding for generations for fear of being found out, but they cannot hide any longer due to all sorts of interlopers wanting to take advantage of their powers and position within time. If these characters don’t learn how to work together they will never succeed at keeping those they love safe.
In The Book of Life, Diana Bishop gets dragged back into her family history when she discovers an ancient book that no one else seems to want. She soon finds herself up against people who will stop at nothing to get what they want including using her own loved ones as pawns in their game. While Diana struggles with her feelings for Matthew and his feelings towards her, he also becomes increasingly distant leaving her confused as to what she should do next. Matthew on his part feels like he is losing control over everything in his life including himself which only adds more stress to an already tense situation.
