In 1852, 22-year-old Eliza Whitaker was found dead in her family’s home, lying across the lap of her dying mother. The local physician determined that she had been strangled to death and Eliza’s fiancé, John Webster, was charged with the crime. This event made international headlines because it challenged traditional gender roles. Eliza Whitaker was educated and independent; Webster, who came from a wealthy family and had no job, deferred to Eliza’s wishes in all aspects of their relationship and wanted to marry her as soon as possible.
