I didn’t mean to start the fire, says Hannah Beckerman in her popular poem, If Only I Could Tell You. For those of us who have never experienced the joy of setting something on fire on purpose. This statement might seem crazy, or at least very destructive behavior. For those of us who are arsonists—or even pyromaniacs—this can be an emotionally loaded statement that evokes feelings of frustration and envy about not being able to set things on fire when we feel like it. Hopefully, you’re not either an arsonist or a pyromaniac!
Overview About “If Only I Could Tell You” by “Hannah Beckerman”
If Only I Could Tell You is a YA book about a girl named Lily who has to deal with her mother’s mental illness and how it affects her, her family, and friends. My inspiration for writing If Only I Could Tell You came from personal experience. My mother had PTSD when she was a child and was living in an orphanage. This book is based on those experiences. (I used my name, but changed Lily’s mom’s name.) It can be scary watching someone you love struggle with mental illness like depression and anxiety so that’s why my main character Lily tries to solve everything on her own instead of leaning on others for help until she realizes that she needs help because no one can go through life alone.

I love how deep and meaningful this book is. You can relate to it. This amazing story is by far one of my favorites. It’s got an interesting twist and although fictional, it still connects with you in ways that are almost unexplainable. The connection you make with each character, whether they be good or bad ones, is just phenomenal. Definitely would recommend reading all three books over and over again! Nice characters, smart plot twists & no boring parts Couldn’t put it down!

Hannah Beckerman’s debut poetry collection, If Only I Could Tell You (Write Bloody Publishing), was published in December 2017.
