Grant by Ron Chernow PDF Download Free here. Philip Henry Sheridan (March 6, 1831 – August 5, 1888) was a career United States Army officer and a Union general in the American Civil War who served in the Western Theatre. His career was noted for his rapid rise to major general and his close association with Lt. Gen. Ulysses S.

Overview About “Grant” by “Ron Chernow”

Ulysses S. Grant was born in Ohio and raised in Missouri. At West Point, he excelled at mathematics and graduated with honors; he would later use his affinity for numbers to help win battles. After a tour of duty in 1848, during which he was attacked by an angry mob in Mexico City, Grant resigned from the army and went home to Missouri to start a family with his fiancée, Julia Dent. When they married in 1848, Grant’s salary was $83 per month; when his father-in-law died two years later leaving them $25,000 and 250 acres of farmland—and when President Lincoln offered him command of all Union forces—he had made $208 monthly before taxes. The Civil War saw him become one of America’s greatest generals and highest-paid soldiers. Though Grant never owned slaves, he did fight against slavery as a general who believed that the Negro is inferior to white men. . . . It is better for us both, therefore, to be separated. He also believed that freed slaves should be given land in southern states where whites were not living (though not right away). But after signing what became known as The Amnesty Proclamation on May 29, 1865 (which pardoned most Confederates), ending slavery became one of his main goals: Let us have peace, he said on April 11, 1865.

Reviews About “Grant” by “Ron Chernow”

I read Grant, A Biography of Ulysses S. Grant as a follow-up to Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. Both are extremely readable biographies, and I would recommend them both highly to anyone interested in reading about American history. However, where I have to agree with many other reviewers is that Team of Rivals was perhaps more interesting for me because it was more recent and thus easier for me to understand (being a modern person). The book did seem to wander at times from discussing Grant’s childhood up until his capture during Vicksburg, which is its own story; but I don’t want to give that away if you haven’t read it yet! The lessons learned will stay with you long after you put down the book. All in all, a very good read. I’d like to see an updated version on Lincoln soon too… 🙂
