The Evening Class by Maeve Binchy is one of the best books I have ever read. It’s funny, it’s sad, it’s heart-warming, it’s dramatic and sometimes humorous as well. This book offers insight into the lives of different people in an Irish village and how they relate to each other over the years, how their values change and how their relationship changes with their friends, family, and others in the village who are part of their life.

Overview About “Evening Class” by “Maeve Binchy”

Evening Class is a short story, published in a collection of short stories by Irish writer Maeve Binchy in 1983. It is about a schoolteacher whose husband dies unexpectedly of a heart attack leaving her alone with her daughter to raise and no means to support them. In despair, she puts an ad in a newspaper asking for lodgers for their spare room. They get a varied group of applicants for her spare room and over time, one lodger becomes two lodgers who become four lodgers until there are eight people living in her house. The book tells how they all come together as a family unit, supporting each other and looking out for each other.

The title refers to evening classes that some of her lodgers take at night school or college so that they can improve themselves or better themselves. I think it’s important because it shows how people can come together when they need help from others, that we should be able to rely on our neighbors and friends when we’re in trouble and it shows that if you give something you will receive something back from someone else. The book has many themes including friendship, love, marriage, etc…I recommend reading it because I think everyone will find something within its pages that will touch them personally whether it be a feeling or memory from your own life or from another person’s life.

Reviews About “Evening Class” by “Maeve Binchy”

Evening Class is a collection of short stories which was written by well-known Irish writer, Maeve Binchy. The book has twenty short stories and it can be divided into two categories: love stories, and war stories. Every single one of these short stories is unique; not only in its plot but also in its characters. The plots are connected with each other through certain details but if you read them casually, you would not notice any connection between those stories at all. Love is a dominant theme throughout Evening Class. No matter what kind of situations her characters find themselves in – falling for a stranger on a train or fighting for their love in Africa – at heart, all of them are searching for true love that every human being wants to find.

It’s interesting how she creates love stories out of very different characters and situations. I really enjoyed reading Evening Class because there were so many things happening in just one book. It’s an easy read, perfect for lazy days when you don’t want to concentrate too much on anything specific. You can just sit back and enjoy her beautiful writing style while she takes you through the different lives of people who are struggling with something important in their lives. This is my first time reading books by Maeve Binchy so I didn’t know what to expect from it but now I know that I will definitely try more books from her.

About “Maeve Binchy” the author of “Evening Class”

Maeve Binchy, MA (; 10 August 1939 – 30 July 2012) was an Irish novelist and short-story writer who wrote in both Irish and English. She was a founding member of Aosdána, and widely regarded as one of Ireland’s greatest living writers. Her work mostly dealt with small-town life in Ireland during earlier decades; much of it reflected on her own experiences growing up in County Dublin. However, her work also includes historical novels set in continental Europe, notably Helsinki and Trieste. The latter deals with local politics just before World War I, while Pascale is based on another historical setting—the post-Napoleonic Vienna Congress.
