When Dana, a black woman living in 1970s California, is transported back to the antebellum South to rescue the husband she had long thought was dead, she risks her life to save him, only to discover he’s been turned into a vampire. She then has to make another dangerous journey, this time back through time again, to save her own life in the present. That story makes up the bulk of Kindred by Octavia E. Butler, which was first published in 1979 and won both the Hugo and Nebula awards in 1980.
