ALL SYSTEMS RED is an award-winning, fast-paced murder mystery set in a futuristic city. Murderbot has been exiled from its homeworld to work security at a massive mining operation. But gets involved in murder and intrigue when a coworker dies under suspicious circumstances. With its dry humor and snarky comments throughout, I found ALL SYSTEMS RED hard to put down! The pace of events was steady, keeping you turning pages. It’s clear that all three books (there are also two prequels) have been written with each other in mind so there are many things that feel like they tie together, but it never felt like you had to read them in order which is always a plus for me!

With each book, I feel like there is more and more character development. As such, I think what makes a good story (rather than just a simple plot) are characters that people can relate to or see themselves in. My favorite thing about Murderbot is its personality- despite being made of murderbots, Murderbot doesn’t consider itself any different from other people (as far as it knows). It has opinions about what it likes and dislikes. It thinks about topics like life and death… especially when one of its friends almost dies on its watch. The growth between books helps to sell me on that aspect of Murderbot’s character development.
About “Martha Wells” the author of “ALL SYSTEMS RED”
She was born in Peoria, Illinois. She grew up in Covington, Kentucky, where she still lives with her husband and children. Her first novel, The Cloud Roads (2012), is part of her Books of the Raksura series which features shapeshifting human-like creatures that live in a complex hierarchical society. It won an Alex Award from YALSA for 2012 and 2013. Her second novel, The Serpent Sea (2013), earned her a 2014 Compton Crook Award for a best first novel.
