Saxon is one of my favorite math series to use. This particular book can be used to teach a small group in an after-school setting. OR it can be used as a supplement at home. For my daughter and I, we found it easy to follow (as long as you follow along as you’re going). This was helpful since she struggles with math and needed a little more guidance than what her class offered at school. The course is broken up into six units of learning, each divided into several lessons. There are many review questions throughout that check for understanding before moving on and just enough information for those doing extra work at home who don’t require much supervision from parents.

Saxon author and publisher Stephen K. Hake has written more than 40 math textbooks with nearly 15 million copies in print in all formats (print, digital & CD-ROM). He has written a math curriculum for all grade levels from kindergarten through high school and beyond. Before entering publishing he taught middle school math for ten years. He graduated from Dordt College in Iowa with a degree in biology/chemistry and earned a master’s degree in science education from Eastern Michigan University. Mr. Hake currently resides outside of Grand Rapids, Michigan with his wife Karen and their two children Justin and Alexi.
