One of sociology’s most respected voices, Eduardo Bonilla-Silva has been analyzing race for years. Now he returns with a provocative new take on how racism works today. Tracing racial patterns across all facets of society—from education and employment to healthcare, religion, and family life. Bonilla-Silva reveals how white Americans deny their own racism as they unconsciously act on it. Yet at a time when many whites are finally willing to acknowledge racial inequality. They often feel more isolated than ever before. That’s because most whites assume that if they aren’t racist, then no one is. And if others have a problem with discrimination, it’s their fault for not speaking up.

Reviews About “Racism Without Racists 5th Edition”

This book is a great way to understand what racism looks like today. Instead of being obvious, like it used to be when people felt more comfortable expressing racist beliefs, today’s racism is often covert. It hides behind claims that we live in a colorblind society where everyone is equal regardless of race. By using tons of examples from everyday life, Bonilla-Silva shows readers how white people use such rhetoric as a way to avoid recognizing their own role (and other white people’s roles) in systemic racial inequality. This perspective helps explain why it is that some seemingly well-intentioned policies (like affirmative action) get so much resistance while others go virtually unnoticed.
