Nadine Jolie Courtney’s young adult debut novel All-American Muslim Girl tackles social issues such as bullying, cultural differences. And identity in an authentic way that teens will relate to and understand. In the book’s first section, we meet 14-year-old Zaynab Alawi and her mother Rida who are used to being the other in their predominantly white neighborhood and home life. But when Zaynab begins attending public school and wears the hijab. She suddenly becomes the focus of everyone’s attention—and not in a good way.

Overview About “All-American Muslim Girl” by “Nadine Jolie Courtney”

All-American Muslim Girl is a young adult novel. Nadine, a high school senior, struggles with her religious identity in light of 9/11 and other events that occurred since then. She questions whether being American means being patriotic to one’s country or practicing one’s religion freely. If a person practices their religion freely, are they considered different from their peers? Are they criticized for doing so? Can an individual practice their faith freely without backlash? All-American Muslim Girl delves into these questions through its strong point of view, language usage, and realistic characters; it also creates opportunities for understanding between Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

Reviews About “All-American Muslim Girl” by “Nadine Jolie Courtney”

This is one of my favorite young adult books. It’s light reading and very fun, but there are lots of important life lessons that come from it. For instance, honesty and trust are very important in personal relationships. You can tell when someone is honest with you because they give you their true opinion rather than what they think you want to hear or what’s politically correct. Also, being a jerk is bad no matter how popular it makes someone—in fact, it makes them look worse than if they were honest and friendly in their communication with people.
