The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem was written by Nathaniel Branden as an analysis of self-esteem and what determines it. The six pillars detailed in the book are self-awareness, independence, self-responsibility, authenticity, competence, and self-respect. According to Branden, these pillars are indispensable to the process of achieving self-esteem, which he calls the central human quest. Furthermore, he contends that there are no substitutes for them; they must be present together and in balance with one another.
