Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner is about Amir, a young boy who is the son of an affluent man in Kabul, Afghanistan in the 1970s. When Amir is six years old. He meets Hassan, who becomes his closest friend and confidant until tragedy strikes and Hassan disappears, leaving Amir to deal with the aftermath of what he has done forever. Throughout this story, Hosseini weaves the tale of Afghanistan’s history while also moving forward to reveal the path that both Amir and Hassan take afterward as they try to find their way in life after experiencing so much sadness during their childhoods.

The Kite Runner written by Khaled Hosseini is an intriguing novel that shows how far a person can go in order to protect their honor and dignity. The story of Kamal and his childhood friend, Amir who lives with his father, Babagul on a wealthy street in Kabul called Jalalabad. Amir’s mother died while giving birth to him and as a result, he feels closer to his father. He treats his servant as if they were part of his family. Kamal on another hand is not fortunate like Amir and has very poor parents who are both illiterate and have never gone to school.

The Kite Runner was written about two friends that were growing up in Afghanistan. Amir, a son of well-to-do parents, and Hassan, a poor servant’s son that was looking after his house. The book started off with a horrible scene where Hassan gets raped. No one believes him when he talks about it, not even Amir. He made fun of him as they grew older and Amir’s father punished him every time he did something wrong. When he got caught stealing some kites from a local shopkeeper’s store, both boys were called to speak to Baba in his study.
About “Khaled Hosseini” the author of The Kite Runner
Khaled was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, and moved to Paris at a young age. He received his BA from California State University, Northridge, and his MBA from Pepperdine University. His debut novel, The Kite Runner was published in 2003, followed by A Thousand Splendid Suns (2007), both of which are bestsellers. They have sold more than 8 million copies worldwide. Hosseini has also published two short story collections: And The Mountains Echoed (2013) and Love, Life & Elephants (2016). He is currently working on an untitled new novel set to be released in 2019. For his extensive efforts towards helping Afghan refugees during their struggle against Taliban oppression in 1999, he was named National Goodwill Ambassador by UNICEF until 2001.
