My Brilliant Friend was originally authored by Elena Ferrante in the Italian language. Later on, it was translated into English by Ann Goldstein. The Italian title was My Brilliant Friend is “L’Amica Geniale”. It begins in 2010 when a woman named Elena, 60 years old, receives a telephone from the Son of her old friend.
The story circles around the efforts of Elena and the second of her old friend “Lila (the nickname is Raffaella) to find the Lila who was disappeared. Her son put every effort to find his mother but failed. So he telephones Elena to get her help to find his mother. This story is based on an event that occurred in Nepal in the 1950s.
Elena and Lila were born in 1944 in Nepal and both are friends. They grew up in a poor family and both were faced with violent and strife neighborhoods. Both attended school together and university life. During the university period, Lila started work with her father’s shoe shop. The family of Lila pressurized her to marry Marcello, the younger son of a powerful local Camorra leader. But Lila was not interested in him. She wants to marry Stefano Caracci, the local grocery owner. She discussed and convinced her family to marry her with Caracchi. Their families agreed and both were married. This time Lila was sixteen.
The central theme and objective of My Brilliant Friend and its other novels are to highlight the esteemed value of friendship. The novel also highlights the lives of women by their social behavior, intellectual, sexual jealously, and a competitive environment within the female friendship.
