Overview About “The God of the Hive” by “Laurie R. King”

The first in a quartet of novels featuring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes, The Beekeeper’s Apprentice is one of four collaborative works written by gifted mystery writers Elizabeth Peters and Barbara Mertz (as Barbara Michaels). Together, they have created a whole new area of mystery fiction which cleverly weaves together fact and fiction to create engrossing tales set against a background that includes historical facts as well as Arthur Conan Doyle’s unrecorded cases with Sherlock Holmes during his early years at Baker Street. As each book progresses, we learn more about Holmes’ history and family life prior to becoming Watson’s chronicler.

In The Beekeeper’s Apprentice, we are introduced to seventeen-year-old Mary Russell who has been sent from her home in New Jersey to live with her mysterious great uncle in England. She quickly becomes friends with her great uncle’s housekeeper Mrs. Hudson and it isn’t long before she meets Sherlock Holmes himself who is much older than she had imagined him to be. As their friendship grows, Mary begins helping Holmes on his cases until he eventually agrees to take her on as an apprentice detective–and so begins their adventures! It is not hard for readers familiar with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories about Sherlock Holmes to recognize some of these characters.

Reviews About “The God of the Hive” by “Laurie R. King”

The novel is a delightful mystery, and it has all of Ms. King’s usual cast–including Mary Russell, and Sherlock Holmes, and their highly endearing interactions with each other. The mystery is complex yet interesting–no mean feat when there are not only five main suspects but several hundred supporting characters as well! I can’t wait for future installments in Ms. King’s new series! (JoAnn F) Review about The God of the Hive: #1) If you haven’t read any of her other books about Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes as a married couple (and if not why not?), do that first as you will be lost at sea without reading them in order!

But once you’ve done so, then jump right into The God of the Hive because it’s great fun to see what they’re up to now and how they get themselves into these situations. And don’t worry; if you have read some or all of those earlier stories, Ms. King provides enough background information so that newcomers won’t feel left out or confused. (Karen W) Review about The God of the Hive: This was my first experience with Laurie R King’s writing. I was hooked from page one! Her character development was amazing! She made me care deeply for Mary and Sherlock even though I had never met them before.
