Born at Midnight (Parasol Protectorate #1) was a breath of fresh air in an already crowded genre and it is a very good start to what is sure to be a great series. Featuring many different vampires and creatures, it also has its own set of rules to live by. It isn’t as detailed or dark as Anne Rice’s vampire chronicles or Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse series, but I didn’t find that to be much of a problem since I enjoyed reading them immensely myself. However, both will make interesting comparisons for readers who have read either of those two series, since there are some definite similarities with these three authors’ writing styles in their own ways which fans can notice for themselves. This book is well-written and engaging enough to keep you hooked until the end. The characters are likable and believable enough to make you care about them, while still being intriguing enough to hold your interest throughout. Overall, a fantastic debut novel from Ms. Hunter!
