Perfect Shadow is a fantasy novel, or really five novels in one larger one. Each book begins with new characters and a new story, but they all share a couple of things in common: One is a city called Black Barrow that serves as sort of an anchor point throughout most of it. The other is Kip, who we meet right at the start. He’s only about ten years old when we meet him, and he’s an orphan whose uncle beat him regularly growing up.

Recently I finished reading Perfect Shadow, a fantasy novel written by a very talented new writer named Brent Weeks. It’s easily one of my favorite books of 2011, and any fan of fantasy should read it. Readers looking for characters that are easy to relate to and an interesting story will not be disappointed. This book has heart-pounding action scenes, intrigue that keeps you guessing, and some of the best characters in fiction today. The first thing that struck me about Perfect Shadow was how much detail Weeks put into his work. There were no dull moments as I read through, and every scene had something going on in it. As someone who enjoys fast-paced stories with lots of excitement, I really appreciated that aspect of Weeks’ writing style.
