He was born on April 12th, 1947 in Baltimore city. His famous novel The Hunt for Red October was a long-term bestseller with more than five million copies sold. After getting promoted from Commander to Captain (he first enlisted in 1968), he began studying at night to receive his bachelor’s degree at Loyola College in Baltimore. He earned his master’s degree in English Literature from Loyola University Maryland in 1973. Then he started working as an insurance agent in his spare time.
