About “Minka Kent” the author of “The Thinnest Air”
On a spring afternoon in 1912, a small group of well-dressed men and women lingered on deck as their steamer pulled into Coney Island. The three-day excursion had been filled with laughs and clambakes; now everyone was gazing down at Manhattan as it grew larger in their view. And then tragedy struck: A freak gust lifted their ship off its moorings and pushed it toward land—and against several other boats docked along its way. The captain’s panicked commands were useless; there was nothing anyone could do to save them from disaster. As word spread through New York City, hundreds raced to help pull bodies from water littered with debris, splintered wood, and shattered glass. It was one of America’s worst maritime disasters—but in time it became nearly forgotten.
