One of the most popular and compelling books in recent years is An Officer and a Spy by Robert Harris. In this book, Harris examines the Dreyfus Affair, an infamous case from 19th century France when French military authorities unjustly convicted Alfred Dreyfus of treason based on false evidence that he was passing secrets to Germany. It wasn’t until years later that the truth came out, clearing his name and reputation.

An Officer and a Spy are about historical fiction. The story is set in Paris during World War I. The main character, Lieutenant Colonel George Picquart, is an honorable man who works for France’s intelligence agency, which is trying to unravel Germany’s military secrets. Through his investigation of Alfred Dreyfus, who was once convicted of treason because he supposedly sold French military secrets to Germany, Picquart discovers that Dreyfus was not guilty at all—the real traitor is someone else working for France. But Picquart can’t prove it because his superiors want to protect themselves from embarrassment. So they reassign him to another post where he can no longer investigate what happened.
Reviews About “An Officer and a Spy” by “Robert Harris”
This book is an excellent read for those interested in espionage, especially that from WWI. The story is based on real events but as often with historical fiction novels, there are many fictional components. In some ways that added to my enjoyment of it but if you’re expecting it to be a true tale, I would look elsewhere. Having said that I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and at times could not put it down! It’s not a long book but has so much packed into its 300 odd pages, many twists and turns throughout; you never know what will happen next. There were times when I thought what if some of these things really happened or are happening still right now somewhere in secret…isn’t that horrifying!
