In it, characters struggle with finding solutions to dark mistakes in their lives; for instance, one character has lost his son years ago in a tragic accident and cannot let go of that regret. This book presents some questions about life after death; for example, what do you do when you are not living but neither are you dead? And, can there be a happy ending to your life if your past goes unresolved? While reading The Memory Thief, readers may wonder what we all might have done differently had we known then what we know now. This book explores how our perception of others as well as ourselves is biased due to our inability to deal with bad memories or wrong decisions.

One of these days I’ll learn that it’s a bad idea to go into a book blind. Unfortunately, The Memory Thief is yet another example of why it’s so important to read book summaries and reviews before reading a book. Especially one that was written by an author you love! This is another case where I wish I would have known more about what was going on in order to fully enjoy what was happening. With any luck, writing my own review will help me organize my thoughts on all of that. Otherwise, it looks like there are several other people who wrote negative reviews and already explained their opinions of The Memory Thief.

Lauren Mansy is a Philadelphia-based novelist. Her second novel, The Memory Thief (Knopf), was published in 2012. And named one of Amazon’s Top Ten Debut Novels of 2012. Her debut novel, The Red Book, was a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection and named one of New York Public Library’s 25 Books to Remember for 2009. She also edited Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?, an anthology of stories about growing old with original artwork from Raymond Pettibon and Karen Green. A graduate of Williams College, Many live in West Philly with her husband, son, and daughter.
