Reviews About “The Shadow King” by “Maaza Mengiste”
This is a captivating historical novel based in Ethiopia that’s both intelligent and moving. It tells a story of revolution, love, tragedy, and betrayal. I had been looking forward to reading it for some time and I was not disappointed! The writing is exquisite — it feels like an homage to one of my favorite authors, Ngũgĩ was Thiong’o. This is my first book by Mengiste but I know it won’t be my last. She has a gift for pulling you into her story from page one.
