Lisa Williamson’s debut novel, Paper Avalanche, isn’t your usual romance novel but it does explore the relationship between friends and lovers and how that relationship can evolve as life takes unexpected turns. The story revolves around Emma, a graduate student at Harvard who has been dumped by her boyfriend and in her attempts to move on finds comfort in an unlikely place – in the arms of another woman.
Overview About “Paper Avalanche” by “Lisa Williamson”
Emotionally charged and provocative, Paper Avalanche is a novel that inspires an emotional connection with its reader. The story follows Abigail Dawson, a high school student who has grown up without love in her life. She lives with her father, Jason Dawson, who beats her and eventually becomes imprisoned for his crime. When Abigail goes to live with her mother after Jason’s release from prison she is shunned by everyone around her due to their negative perceptions of domestic violence victims like herself. Through all of these tumultuous experiences, Abigail grows into a strong young woman. She eventually forms a deep connection with Emmett, one of her peers in school; but then tragedy strikes, changing everything once again.
Reviews About “Paper Avalanche” by “Lisa Williamson”
There is no denying that Williamson has lovely prose and a knack for creating honest, lovable characters. The storyline itself is touching and thought-provoking, if a little predictable in places. But despite all of these positives, there are just so many infuriating negatives—from loose ends left hanging to questions that go unanswered to simple errors in punctuation—that it’s hard to recommend Paper Avalanche as anything more than an example of how not to write a novel. This book might make for interesting bedtime reading if you’re stuck in hospital waiting rooms or on airplanes; otherwise, steer clear.
