Bird Box by Josh Malerman is an exciting novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page. The story begins with Malorie’s narration about her daily routine of running errands, cooking meals, and caring for her children who are living inside their home all blindfolded because if they happen to see an image of something, no matter how small or fleeting, they’ll immediately try to kill themselves or harm others in some other way.

This book is about a woman who is on a journey to find out what happened to her husband, who was working in a lab, and why there are no birds in their world. The only way she can see them is if she looks at them through a thick dark blindfold that they all wear until they find safety with another human being. If anyone takes off their blindfold or catches even a glimpse of these creatures…they kill themselves immediately. In addition to an exciting storyline, I recommend reading it because it has some very interesting aspects, mainly how easily manipulated people can be when fearful for their lives. There’s also an aspect of nature versus nurture brought up near the end of the book but I won’t spoil it for you! Happy reading!

This is a novel that was written very, very quickly. That’s clear from its occasional weaknesses in plot, character, and description. But it also gave me chills in ways I didn’t think were possible when reading fiction. It made me feel almost too scared to continue reading at times. And so even though Bird Box isn’t perfect, it’s still an unforgettable debut about fear and survival (I don’t have to tell you that because everyone already knows). The story is simple enough: There are monsters out there who attack humans if they see them.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, but a midwesterner at heart. He has previously worked as a high school history teacher, two sports play-by-play broadcasters for television and radio, and still does freelance sportscasting and voiceover work when time permits.
