The novel circles around a family that migrated from the Philippines to the United States of America.
Author Elaine Castillo beautifully explained and added multi-feelings of the characters. Elaine given deep sentiments of both joyful and tragic, positive and negative thinking approach of family relations and inner conflicts. It would be impossible to put down the book once you start reading this novel.
it is the 1960s when a young Philipina girl namely Paz is bringing up in a poverty-stricken village in Pangasinan, located in the Bay Area of San Francisco, rooted in the Philippines. She is an intelligent girl and has extraordinary brain intelligence as compared to other classmates. Luckily, after completing her A-Level, she gets a chance to study at the University of California. So, she migrates from the Philippines to California and starts graduating in nursing.
From the whole reading of this novel, it feels that Castillo has more space in the room for the Philippines, instead of the US. The author stretches the novel to the borders of San Franciso, again and again. At end of this book, the reader, I, reached the conclusion that America of Castillo “American is not in the heart” is different from the American of Bulosan “America is in the Heart”.
About “Elaine Castillo”, the author of “America Is Not in The Heart”
Elaine Castillo, an American Writer, born in 1984 in San Fransico Bay Area and raised there, and attended the University of California. In 2009, Castillo moved to London and completed her Masters in Creative and Life Writing from Barkeley Goldsmiths, University of London.
Castillo’s debut novel is America Is Not the Heart was published in 2018 and luckily this first novel received widespread acclaim. She is the three-time recipient of the RSE Prize (Rosely Schneider Eisner) and nominated for the Pat Kavanagh Award.
