In keeping with her usual style, Nora Robertson tells a tale of heartbreak and romance. Born in Shame takes place in Ireland. Jordan Maguire’s father is dead and her mother has run off with some friend she met at a pub. She’s sent to live with her grandparents who she barely knows. Her grandmother is strict and doesn’t approve of Jordan for many reasons; most importantly because she believes Jordan is an impure woman due to her mother having left her when she was just a young girl.

The story unfolds as Jordan tries to find out more about her family history while also trying to win over her grandmother’s approval. It’s a lovely read that includes all of Nora Roberts’s signature elements: drama, romance, and beautiful scenery. I enjoyed it very much! On a side note, it took me almost 2 months to get through reading Born in Shame. If you’re not used to reading large books or aren’t fond of big books then you might want to take that into consideration before picking up your copy.

If you read my review of Down Home Stranger, you know that I absolutely loved it. I’ll admit that when I picked up Born in Shame I was expecting a similar experience, but as soon as I opened it and started reading, it was obvious that it would be nothing like Down Home Stranger. In fact, there wasn’t much similarity to any of Nora’s other books (which is what initially interested me) so don’t go into Born in Shame thinking you’re going to get an idyllic version of Ireland with fantastical characters and a completely quirky plot. This book is gritty and dark and very real. It made me think about things that I’d never really considered before, which isn’t something I’m used to from Nora Roberts.

The main character in Born in Shame, Brenna O’Toole, grew up on a farm with her mother and father who were part of an Irish Traveller family. She had a happy childhood until she hit puberty at age 13; suddenly she was expected to help raise her younger siblings while also being forced into an arranged marriage with a man who could give her mother money for her business ventures.
