Reign of Brayshaw is a great follow-up to Reign, but in my opinion, I think you should read Reign first. Since it is not a direct continuation, there are some things that you might miss without having read the first book. There are also references to events from Reign that make a bit more sense if you have read it. I really enjoyed Brayson’s voice and perspective in both books. However, in most of these stories, he is not seeing things as clearly as we do, and therefore he isn’t always reliable or trustworthy as a narrator. I appreciate how starkly different and complex his character was in both books. He does many things that seem questionable or even morally wrong but it is clear that he has reasons for doing them and feels justified in those actions.
The story itself was good. It kept me guessing until almost the end about what had happened to him and why everyone seemed so desperate to keep him quiet about it. I would recommend reading Reign before reading Reign of Brayshaw because I feel like you will enjoy it more with all of your questions answered, but if you don’t want to go back then just be aware that there are some unresolved plots points from Reign referenced here. If you like dark fantasy with unreliable narrators then give these books a try!
