With their father and brothers away at the World’s Fair in Chicago, 15-year-old Alice MacLeish must look after her mother, who has suffered from consumption (tuberculosis) since Alice was an infant. In the small village of Carolina Beach, they are part of an insular group that includes the town doctor and his wife, so all eyes are on them when Alice’s mother slips into an irreversible coma. About “Mary Alice Monroe” the author of “The Summer Girls”
Mary Alice Monroe was born in 1943 in Atlanta, Georgia, but spent her formative years in Morganton, North Carolina. She attended Gardner Webb University and Western Carolina University and later took additional graduate courses at Appalachian State University. In 1968 she moved to New Bern, North Carolina, where she met her husband; they have one son. For twenty-three years she taught school while raising a family and working on her writing. Her first novel The Little School (written under the pen name of Alice Adams) was published in 1988.
