The new novel The Priory of the Orange Tree from best-selling fantasy author Samantha Shannon has been out for a couple of weeks. And I wanted to take some time to talk about it. There are two big reasons I wanted to read The Priory of Oranges as soon as possible. First, I love well-written fantasy with strong characters and a cool world or storyline; second, because I’ve met Ms. Shannon several times and think she’s so charming and funny that her book had to be fabulous. Even with all my good feelings going into reading it (and letting everyone know I was excited about it). It still managed to surpass my expectations! This is an epic fantasy set in a medieval-like world where magic is real and there are different types of magic users who have different strengths.

Samantha Shannon is a British author who has published three novels and won several awards, including most recently being awarded the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. Her debut novel The Bone Season was shortlisted for both The Guardian First Book Award and The Philip K. Dick Award in 2013. Her second novel, The Mime Order, was also nominated for both prizes in 2014 and her third novel A Reaper at the Gates was released in July 2018 to critical acclaim. It is currently shortlisted for both prizes again. She is currently working on her fourth book as well as a TV series based on her first book which will be produced by Blumhouse Productions (the company behind getting Out).
