Review About “The Bone Season” by “Samantha Shannon”
The Great Depression plunged the American people into an economic crisis unlike any endured in this country before or since. From 1931 to 1940, America’s Gross National Product dropped 45 percent. Unemployment rose to 25 percent and homelessness increased exponentially as thousands of businesses failed. The nation’s money was so devalued that a hamburger cost 15 cents and a new car could not be purchased for less than $1,000 (equivalent to roughly $15,000 today). To make matters worse, more than 5,000 banks went out of business during those years resulting in 12 million people losing their savings and investments. For most Americans, life changed completely. Many families were separated as children were forced to leave home and find work in order to support themselves and their families.
About “Samantha Shannon” the author of “The Bone Season”
– A twenty-two-year-old British girl who lives in Coventry, England is one of Britain’s most promising young writers. She won The Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize with her first novel, a dystopian thriller called The Bone Season. And recently she was shortlisted for Wales Book of the Year 2012, with a book titled Faller. What were your thoughts when you saw your novel in print? It was still very surreal at that point because I had already spent so long working on it and thinking about it in my head, and now it suddenly wasn’t in my head anymore.
