This book is about a young girl named Tilly and her struggles with blindness and living in an abusive home with her father. In exchange for a better life, Tilly’s father commits horrific acts against his daughter. Once even threw acid on her face so he could send her to a hospital for surgery. This story is about how she becomes one of five victims of child abuse in England to be rescued from similar circumstances. Although she loses hope after going through years of physical and mental abuse, help eventually comes when a social worker steps in and puts an end to it all. I read this book as part of my final project as an advanced English student at Avondale High School, under Mrs. Berndt’s class.
