John Scalzi’s The Human Division may just be the best book I read all year. While John Scalzi has written some absolutely outstanding fiction in the past. This novel was unlike anything he had done before and it showed me that he was just as comfortable with the novel form as he was with the short story. The Human Division had all of his signature wit and humor that we’ve come to expect from him. But it also added depth and character development that only comes with great world-building and an understanding of character growth and motivation.

The characters are quite diverse and I’m always happy to see women playing an active role in a sci-fi book. The voice of these women is very distinct from one another, which made me appreciate each of them even more. There’s a variety of antagonists and allies that keep you interested even if you aren’t too fond of some characters at first. Action scenes are well described, with enough detail to get a good picture without going overboard and taking up too much space in the narrative.

John Michael Scalzi II (born June 27, 1969) is an American science fiction author. He won a Hugo Award for his novel Old Man’s War in 2006 and has been nominated for several other awards, including Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Awards. In 2007 he was nominated for a World Fantasy Award for his collection The Mallet of Loving Correction.
