An entertaining and thought-provoking first contact story that serves as a great sequel to Old Man’s War. In some ways, The Last Colony is more ambitious than its predecessor: its scope is larger, there are more moving parts, it covers longer time periods, and it has a deeper message. It’s also somewhat harder to read; it suffers from a bit of middle book syndrome. However, I think those difficulties make it an even better story in many ways because they show how hard John Scalzi works to improve his craft and make each novel better than the last one. As always, The Last Colony takes humanity beyond our solar system and shows what happens when we meet up with another sentient species for the first time…well, since WWII anyway.
