The second book in the New York Times bestselling Broken Earth series and sequel to the Hugo Award-winning The Fifth Season, N. K. Jemisin’s The Obelisk Gate plunges farther into the Stillness and its inhabitants than any mortal person have ever gone—and what it finds there changes everything.
Overview About “The Obelisk Gate” by “N. K. Jemisin”
The Fifth Season, one of those books that you can’t stop talking about, was recently confirmed as nominated for a Hugo Award. If you haven’t read it yet (and if you haven’t, why not?) and enjoy epic fantasy, then The Obelisk Gate is definitely worth your time. We also recommend picking up The Stone Sky, also written by N.K. Jemisin and again, confirmed as nominated for a Hugo Award. Needless to say, we were excited when Night Shade Books sent us an advance copy of The Obelisk Gate! In order to give our readers an idea of what to expect from their new release, they had us write our impressions in an Early Reviewer Review. Check out what we thought below!
Review About “The Obelisk Gate” by “N. K. Jemisin”
This is a rather short book (1120 pages) with a lot of action, great twists and turns, world-building, and interesting characters. This may sound somewhat cheesy, but it’s like watching a whole season of Game of Thrones in one sitting. Especially when you are already familiar with her first book (The Fifth Season), there are many connections that make sense only to readers who know both stories well. Reading about Essun in The Fifth Season makes reading about other characters in The Obelisk Gate more pleasurable because you understand how they fit into a bigger story from an earlier point and how their actions have consequences for future events – even if it’s not clear yet where things will lead next.
About “N. K. Jemisin” the author of “The Obelisk Gate”
I’m an author and African-American woman who loves exploring complex female characters, themes of power and identity, unusual family structures, diverse relationships (including those crossing societal boundaries), and creating worlds both new and strange. I like writing speculative fiction about people struggling to rise above their circumstances; I also write about strong women standing at crossroads in their lives – moments when there are more possibilities than previously thought possible, drawing them in multiple directions with only their own convictions to guide them. I’ve won multiple awards for my novels from major speculative fiction organizations such as SFWA (the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America) and Locus Magazine, including being a finalist for both Hugo and Nebula Awards. I have had short stories published in anthologies as well as several collections.
