Cixin Liu was born in 1955 and grew up in Wuhan, Hubei Province. After graduating from the Beijing Broadcasting Institute in 1978, he worked at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences as an editor and journalist until he became a full-time writer in 1993. He has won two science fiction awards with his story Peacock in 1986. Liu’s The Three-Body Problem won the 2015 Hugo Award for Best Novel. And the 2015 Nebula Award for Best Novel, making him the first Asian writer to win both awards.

A Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel, a Hugo Award for Best Novel, and a Nebula Award for Best Novel. Also in 2014, it was announced as one of the nominees for best novel in both the Chinese science fiction award and Japanese Seiun Awards. In 2015 The Three-Body Problem received nominations to the Tiptree Award Honor List and James Tiptree Jr. Award Science Fiction & Fantasy Book of 2014, the most prestigious literary award for work that expands or explores our understanding of gender.

Began reading SF at ten, while living in a mountain village far from Beijing, China. Aged 17 years old, won first prize in a national writing contest held by Beijing’s Star TV (an event where thousands of entries are received each year). First came to prominence for his science fiction works beginning with The Three-Body Problem series. The English translation of that book has won both Hugo and Nebula Awards. The second volume, The Dark Forest, is due out shortly from Tor Books/Head of Zeus. In 2015 he was named a runner-up for Cosmos magazine’s People’s Choice award (the readers’ choice) for his new work on theoretical physics. He lives with his family in Shanghai.
