Overview About “Children of Time” by “Adrian Tchaikovsky”
Children of Time is an epic science fiction novel that tells a story about humanity’s struggle to survive in a far-off distant future when humans have colonized other planets. The book opens with a prologue explaining how planet Earth was nearly wiped out in a very similar way to our own dinosaurs. We then jump ahead 300 years into humanity’s future on several colonies and starships filled with colonists who are unable to procreate due to genetic problems. OR carry fetuses long enough for them to survive. Humanity needs new genetic diversity. And they receive it from another starship coming back with refugees from yet another colony. That has had its species destroyed during an invasion by spiders.
Reviews About “Children of Time” by “Adrian Tchaikovsky”
Children of Time is a marvelous book that uses its characters and story to explore philosophical questions. The world-building is intricate, but not overwhelming. I love how deftly Tchaikovsky mixes politics, religion, philosophy, and technology into his tale without overpowering it with high concepts. The main characters are well developed, believable, and human (even if they aren’t human). They react in believable ways that make you think about yourself as well as them. Just great stuff!
