About “Gary Gygax” the Author

Gary Gygax (1938-2008) was a writer and game designer who worked on fantasy roleplaying games, particularly Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. Gary Gygax was born in Chicago, Illinois, on January 27, 1938. He graduated from Lake Forest College with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and later obtained a Master of Science degree in educational psychology at Indiana University. In 1965 he created an original set of rules for medieval miniature wargaming. These rules became popular around his hometown of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. His game expanded to become a hobby and social pastime among his group of friends in Lake Geneva, mostly members of his own family. It also spread across other areas around Wisconsin as well as across college campuses.
