The Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Player’s Handbook 2nd Edition by David Zeb Cook was published in 1989, and it went on to become one of the best-selling tabletop roleplaying games books of all time. While the AD&D Player’s Handbook 2nd Edition received mostly positive reviews, many felt that it was too basic and that new players needed better explanations of how to actually play the game and incorporate the rules into their gameplay experiences.

About “David Zeb Cook” the Author

David Zeb Cook is an author, game designer, and computer programmer. He began his career in 1974 as a participant in TSR’s new Designer Program. The company was impressed enough with his work to make him a full-time employee. In 1978 he became editor of the company’s flagship magazine The Dragon, a position he held for ten years. When TSR returned to publishing AD&D books in 1989 after a six-year hiatus, Cook created Monstrous Compendium Volume One: Monsters—an annual catalog of monsters for use with Advanced Dungeons & Dragons First Edition that spawned four sequels covering all monster types from aboleths to zombies. Beginning in 1990, Cook led development on what would eventually become D&D 3rd edition.
