Lisa Jewell’s novel The House We Grew Up In opens with the arrival of the narrator. Sarah, at her childhood home after receiving news that her mother has suffered a severe stroke and has been left in a coma. However, as she enters the house, Sarah finds herself transported back to an earlier time. When she was 13 years old and her family lived in the same house. But under very different circumstances than they do now.
Overview About “The House We Grew Up In” by “Lisa Jewell”
The story revolves around three brothers, Leo, Jake, and Sam. They live with their parents in a ‘house we grew up in outside of London. The novel slowly winds back through memories as we discover why they are all still there. Because they can’t escape their past. Their father has been gone for years – no one can quite agree on where he is or what he’s doing. And their mother is becoming increasingly frail and unwell after a recent stroke. It seems that no one knows how to handle it, least of all her three remaining sons. It’s a beautifully written book, which hooks you right from the start.
Reviews About “The House We Grew Up In” by “Lisa Jewell”
I like reading books that are realistic and about real people. This book is about two sisters growing up in a house in England. The story takes place between 1960-1980, so a lot of what happens has changed since then. But there are still many things that stay true today as well. For example, it was illegal to have gay relationships at one point (you could get sent to jail), and that’s something we still have issues with today. It made me think a lot about how far we’ve come, but also how much further we can go to make things better for everyone. It’s worth checking out if you’re looking for an interesting read!
