I read The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood in college. The book was required reading for a class. But I was immediately enthralled and surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It takes place in what used to be modern-day America and paints a bleak future. Where women are essentially slaves to men. In their society, women could no longer procreate on their own (all miscarriages were at risk of being charged with genocide). Women are handmaidens — essentially sex slaves. Whose only job is to conceive a child for couples who have been unsuccessful on their own. The story shows us that even in an oppressive world. Hope is never completely lost and love can still exist.

Margaret Eleanor Atwood, CC OOnt FRSC (born November 18, 1939) is a Canadian poet, novelist, literary critic, essayist, and environmental activist. She is a winner of several literary awards including the Governor General’s Award and has been inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame. Born in Ottawa and raised in northern Ontario and Quebec City, she did not move to Toronto until she was 30 years old. During that time she worked as a waitress, museum attendant, and writer-in-residence at York University.
