I have read Song of the Crimson Flower by Julie C. Dao and have enjoyed it thoroughly. This book is about finding your place in life, taking chances, and overcoming obstacles. And finding hope even when your world has fallen apart around you. In this book, the main character, Mai, finds that when you require help, no matter what the reason may be. Sometimes people will come together to help you in ways you never thought were possible or even imaginable. I recommend reading this book if you are looking for an enjoyable fantasy novel with an interesting storyline and relatable characters!

Song of the Crimson Flower is an exceptional fantasy novel in its own right but also works extremely well as a transitional text between YA and adult fantasy. Readers that enjoyed A Game of Thrones will love Song, but so will fans of Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel series and Trudi Canavan’s Black Magician Trilogy who are looking for something similar to read after they’ve outgrown their teen years. Everyone else should try it too because it is just that good! I think everyone could enjoy it, with or without pre-existing knowledge about Asian folklore. Most importantly though? There are dragons in Song! We need more dragons in our lives; give Song a chance and see for yourself!
