Overview About “Abnormal Psychology (17th Edition)”

Abnormal psychology refers to a branch of psychology that studies those behaviors and thought processes that are not considered normal or average. Abnormal psychology can also be called clinical psychology or psychopathology, though it is typically practiced by psychiatrists. In many ways, abnormal psychology overlaps with other subfields of psychology such as developmental and social. The term abnormal may seem a little odd when used to describe psychological behavior because it seems to suggest that these behaviors are somehow wrong or bad. To an extent, abnormal behavior is often seen as pathological. But in some cases, abnormalities of thinking can be adaptive under certain circumstances. Such as would occur in dissociative disorders—or within different cultures.
